Replacing your front door or an entry door is consistently ranked as one of the top home improvement projects in terms of return on investment (ROI) in industry reports and publications. But many homeowners don’t think too much about ROI -- right? Most people probably ask: how much will it cost to have this front door installed?

You might already have seen our list of 6 Great Reasons to Replace Your Front Door. But, we want to dig a little deeper and get into the cost and the numbers behind the home improvement industry’s enthusiasm for front door replacement. Hopefully we’ll affirm that small part of you that does think about cost, ROI, and the practicality of such things that replacing your front door is a great next project.

The Cost of a Fiberglass Front Door

First, let's be clear that to do the job right you aren't just replacing the door or door slab. Replacing the door slab, frame, threshold, exterior trim and other components, which collectively are sometimes referred to as the "door system", is necessary and always included in quotes on our entry door page

A fiberglass door system provides a strong ROI in part thanks to the following factors:

1) Less maintenance than both wood and steel doors
2) Improvements in energy efficiency
3) High quality and durability
4) Relatively low-cost project We’ve already touched on maintenance and energy efficiency in our previous post, as well as the durability and security that a quality front door can provide. But what do we mean by relatively low-cost?

For starters, a high-quality fiberglass front door fully installed “all in” with lifetime warranty coverage will typically cost between $1,900 and $3,300. This can include many customization options such as hardware, windows, or sidelites, which explains the range in price points. Entry door replacement is the 4th least expensive home improvement project according to the Remodeling 2016 Cost v. Value Report.

Having visions of your dream entry door project yet? Let’s talk numbers.

Average Job Cost. According to the data compiled in the Remodeling 2016 Cost v. Value Report, fiberglass entry door replacement jobs had an average cost of $3,126. The Remodeling Impact Report, prepared by the National Association of REALTORS Research Department and published in conjunction with the National Association of the Remodeling, placed average job cost for fiberglass entry door replacement at $2,500.

Average Resale Value. The Remodeling 2016 Cost v. Value Report placed average resale value at $2,574, while the the 2015 Remodeling Impact Report cited an average resale value of $1,500.

Percentage Cost Recouped. According to the 2016 Cost v. Value Report, fiberglass entry door replacement yields a whopping 82.3% average cost recoup, up over 10% from last year’s 72% cost recoup for the same project. That’s good momentum! And it's consistent with the uptick in cost recoup for entry door replacement since 2011, which means it's a smart long-term ROI even if selling your home isn’t currently on your radar.

Report: Replacing Your Front Door is Satisfying

In case you're not numbered-out already, here are a couple more compelling entry door replacement stats worth noting:

Entry door replacement ranks 6th overall in terms of % cost recouped for home improvement projects according to the 2016 Cost v. Value Report. Installing a new fiberglass front door yielded a Joy Score of 9.7, according to the 2015 Remodeling Impact Report. But wait -- what’s a Joy Score? It’s Impact Report’s rating to approximate how satisfying homeowners feel about a project. It's basically a 1 to 10 scale and the score is the number of remodelers who were happy or satisfied with seeing their completed project out of 10. So, 9.7 is a hard Joy Score to beat! Replacing your front door or another entry door has a good financial ROI and a great satisfaction ROI!
